Do you want to disable Gutenberg and keep the old WordPress editor on your website? Guten berg is a new editor that replaces the classic WordPress editor. Although it looks modern, there are many users who find it difficult to use and go back to the old editor. In today’s article, I will show you how to easily disable Guten berg and maintain the classic editor in WordPress.
What is Gutenberg?
As I said, since Gutenberg version 5.0 there is a new WordPress editor with the goal of improving the writing experience on WordPress.
This tool acts as a page builder plugin and allows us to drag and drop items into a post or page.
The goal of this tool is to increase flexibility and allow WordPress users to create unique layouts for their content with rich multimedia content.
Since WordPress 4.9.8, the WordPress team has called on people to try out Gutenberg in the WordPress dashboard.
It aims to get feedback from millions of WordPress users and make Gutenberg more complete for the first release.
Gutenberg became the default WordPress editor in WordPress 5.0.
Why Disable Gutenberg in WordPress?
Many users feel that the current version of Guten berg does not really work as expected. This is evident with a rating of only 2.3/5 for the Gutenberg plugin.
At the time of writing, there are 1525 ratings and up to 429 ratings.
Despite the negative reviews, the WordPress development team continues to make Gutenberg the default editor in WordPress 5.0.
Doing so is bothering WordPress users. They want the option to disable Guten berg and keep the old editor they were using.
Thankfully, we have a WordPress plugin that allows you to do just that.
Let’s do it right away.
1. Disable Gutenberg with the Classic Editor Plugin
In this method, I will be using the Classic Editor plugin developed and maintained by the WordPress development team.
The first thing you need to do is to install and activate the Classic Editor plugin. For more details, check out my detailed guide on how to install WordPress plugins.
This plugin works great and when activated it will deactivate Gutenberg.
Classic Editor
also gives you the option to put Guten berg and Classic Editor together. We will easily set this option in the plugin settings.
Simply go to Settings » Writing in WordPress admin area. You will see the option to set in “Classic Editor Settings”.
Don’t forget to click the Save Changes button to save the settings you just made.
Now you will see a new link in the post menu, click on this link to create a new post using the classic editor.
You can also edit old posts using the classic editor. Simply go to Posts » All Posts and you’ll see an “Edit (Classic)” link at the bottom of the article.
2. Use Classic Editor with Gutenberg Plugin Disabled
If you want to disable Guten berg with certain user roles and post types then this method is for you.
The first thing you need to do is to install and activate the Deactivate Guten berg plugin.
If enabled, you need to visit Settings » Disable Gutenberg to configure plugin settings.
By default,
the plugin disables Gutenberg everywhere with all users on the website. However, if you want to limit Guten berg to only certain user roles and post types, you will need to uncheck the ‘Full Disabled’ option.
Unchecking this option will show other options to more selectively disable Gutenberg.
This option is useful if you are using a WordPress plugin but are not compatible with Guten berg.
But instead of turning it off completely, you may also want to use Guten berg for a few other areas on your website.

WP has thousands of plugins as well as interfaces, from website sales to community websites.
There are a number of third-party tools that rely heavily on Editor Classic. The core development team is trying to give developers enough time to adapt their plugins and themes to Gutenberg.
However, it is very likely that some plugins will not be fully compatible with Gutenberg.
